About me

I work as a second language and special needs teacher, in Voss in Norway, and have a particular interest in the challenges faced by learners with disabilities.
My name is Bridget, which is a bit of a give-away; I am clearly not Norwegian, yet Norway is the country I call home. Fully bilingual in English and Norwegian and semi-fluent in French and Arabic, I love language and linguistics.
I enjoy educating myself, in the personal sphere as well as professionally. My greatest achievement and challenge is being the mother of seven great kids, currently aged 9-33. My fourth child, who has Down syndrome, has especially enriched my life, highlighting the process and effort involved in learning life skills such as communication, self-care and independence.

This photo was taken by our local paper, Avisa Hordaland, during the Christmas Eve church service, which was held outdoors this year, due to COVID-19. At four o’clock in the afternoon, it was already dark, but the weather was clear and not too cold.
I am absurdly fond of the huge house, dating from 1923, where I have lived since 2017. There is plenty of room for us and our workaway volunteers, as well as paying guests, hosted through booking.com, airbnb, and our own site. In the summer, I also run the café on the ground floor.
Of course, a house like this is a never ending project; there is always something to paint, fix or repair. I dream of unlimited time and money, but enjoy having to be creative and resourceful.
